TEESSHIPS
A FAVOURITE SHIP
FRANCIS SAMUELSON
The page below was one of the earliest I posted
on TEESSHIPS under a series on local vessels.
Since then I have shown two more views of the FRANCIS SAMUELSON in the 40+ YEARS
OF BAD ROADS series, as depicted here:

FRANCIS SAMUELSON at her berth just off Dock
Point, Middlesbrough Dock Cut, 28 August 1964. T.C.C.
DREDGER NO. 1 in the background.
(I have always felt the sunlighting of this particular print to have an ethereal
quality.)

FRANCIS SAMUELSON at the same location, but
this time taken while on a river trip, 23 August 1965
FRANCIS SAMUELSON (5119557), Tees Conservancy Commissioners, Stockton, 140gt,
built 1924 by Smith's Docks Co. Ltd., South Bank, Middlesbrough. 1972 broken up.
It is only now that I have realised the first view above is not actually the same as the last one below! Albeit there is only one month difference between the views it is the September 1964 one that could accurately be described as atmospheric, rather than ethereal as above.
Suffice to say the top view above attracted the attention of local painter Michael Barker (email: michael.barker2@ntlworld.com). Initially asking me about the TCC colour scheme he pretty quickly dashed off this painting which I liked so much it became my birthday present last November, and now hangs on my study wall.

The subsequent outcome is that the old SAMMY should now join my list of FAVOURITE SHIPS!
At some stage I have also featured a further view but not one taken by myself. This shows her moored midstream and, I think, partly stripped down prior to disposal.

LOCAL VESSELS
FRANCIS SAMUELSON

The 'Sammy' as affectionately known lies at her normal berth off Dock Point on 27 July 1967.
and with
T.C.C. PRIESTMAN DREDGER NO. 2

Berthed at the T.C.C. Graving Dock on 19 March 1968.

I always considered this an "atmospheric" shot with my old camera. Taken on 24 September 1964 it shows the FRANCIS SAMUELSON at her Dock Point berth in the foreground; with T.C.C. DREDGER NO. 1 across the river; and the AMBERLEY at buoys further upriver.
CAREER DETAILS
FRANCIS SAMUELSON: 140gt; completed at Smith's Dock, Middlesbrough in 1924 for Tees Conservancy Commissioners; 1.1.1967 ownership passed to Tees and Hartlepools Port Authority; 1972 broken up.
