Map and Photos

I have a number of illustrations which I hope will be of interest - they certainly make the story live again for me.

With one exception, the map and photos are from the book TURMOIL by Ewart Brookes, published by Jarrolds in 1956. Several of the photos are attributed to Associated Press, London; but others to other sources.

Map:

This photo is the exception to the source referred to above. This comes from the World Ship Society publication FROM AMERICA TO UNITED STATES - PART ONE by Sawyer and Mitchell.

From the book TURMOIL

This is the tug TURMOIL, the main subject of Ewart Brooks' book, in the foreground.

.... and they literally walked off the horizontal funnel to safety!

After updating these pages the other day I had a look at this series of excellent photos and it is fair to say they brought a lump to my throat. Separately, Dave Martin found the following view of the FLYING ENTERPRISE on 9 January 1952 (which is among those on the above site).

02.06.04: A couple more photos found by Dave Martin:

The USS WILLARD KEITH closes...

Again, the WILLARD KEITH nearby, and that dot in the distance must be the TURMOIL.
.... but why does the funnel of FE look to be forward of the superstructure in this shot???? (has it been inaccurately retouched???)
