TEESSHIPS
IN THE BEGINNING!
Part 5
I've been having a further dig in my shoeboxes of photos and found several more IN THE BEGINNING shots, this time in postcard size print format which I have then scanned at my more normal display size.
Again, in date order

Middlesbrough Dock - 3 May 1961
It seems that back in those early days I was sometimes intrigued by some relatively small detail in the structure of a ship. Here I seem to recall liking the construction of the stanchions and cross-section supports in the superstructure of:
BENCRUACHAN (5040794) The Ben Line Steamers, Leith, 8047gt, completed by J.L. Thompson & Sons Ltd., Sunderland, 6-1946. 1966 ANNUNCIATION DAY (Greece), 197(4) DEMIS (Greece), 1979 broken up.

Middlesbrough Dock - 23 May 1961
I think one would have to concede this is "for the record" only!
CITY OF COLOMBO (5073600) Ellerman Lines Ltd., Glasgow, 7739gt, completed by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Glasgow, 2-1956. 1977 BENMHOR (British), 1979 broken up.
... hiding CHYEBASSA (5072606) British India S.N. Co. Ltd., London, 7043gt, completed Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Glasgow, 12-1942. 1969 broken up.

Middlesbrough Dock - 10 June 1961
(most of) WOODARRA (5392678) British India S.N. Co. Ltd., London, 8753gt, completed Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Glasgow, 4-1957. 1969 PANDO GULF (British), 1974 BENALBANACH (British), 1978 broken up.

Back then I was quite a shy, timid and quiet 15-year old schoolboy heading for the end of 4th year in Grammar School. That was the time at which we could seek career advice. Well, with my developing interest in ships I did ask about going to sea but that was soon scuppered when I found the wearing of spectacles precluded me from training as a deck officer. I seem to also recall taking some aptitude test and saying in answer to one question that I would become homesick if working away from home!!
Anyway, it seems that occasionally I would speak up for myself and somehow my suggestion that a visit to a local shipyard might be of benefit was acted upon. Which is how I and others found ourselves on board the BORDER FALCON then in the process of fitting out at Smith's Dock.

I often wonder what the old chap on the right made of our "invasion"
of his territory?
(and he was probably younger than I am now!!!)
