A FAVOURITE SHIP

TENO

01.08.04: Hello Ron my name is Arnstein Borgen i live in a place named Slemmestad app.30 kilometres from OSLO the main city of Norway. My appology for my bad English but i try to do my best. [No worry, we can understand well enough what you are saying.] Here in Slemmestad it vas a great Cement factory earlier by now is just some big Cement storage tanks left. I remember Teno in 1968 i was 14 years old and the cement company a/s NORCEM hired to ships the s/s Teno and s/s Keynes who was earlier belongs to stephensen&clarke London. The ships was mainly intakt they use them for storage of cement pellets for later grindig to cement. The two ships where hired from the scrapper Torsten Johannisson in Gothenburg Sweden and in the beginning of 1969 they was tough (towed) back to the owner for final scrapping. The shps where anchored up just outside a big a whaste storage place near the factory. In the sea outside the storage place they use to blow out dust fron the cement production this dust was getting hard as concrete on the bottom so when they come for pickin up the ships the anchors was concreted fast to the bottom so thy are still here on Slemmestad buried forever in the sea bottom. The name on the ship Teno was as you mention at your web side s/sEljes of Helsinki. Several times we where on board the ships unleagal of course and it was whery exciting Eljes was mainly intakt and it was just the wheel and main compass removed from the bridge i am very intrestin of radio eqipment and i still are so i pick some items from the radio room . I still have som radiotelegrams on my loft and badge from the radioroomdoor some place. I havent seen them for years but i shall look after them vhen i got some time for it. I remember the telegrams was from Haifa radio and Gdynia radio.I recognice the ship at your pictures but the bridge and the captains accomondations was like another ship on your website RAMSNES. The radioroom vas back on the bridge as usual together vhit radiotelegraphist cabin and as far as i remember it vas a chartroom as well on the other side. Othervise the ship was like it is on the picture on the website. I remember the engine was ligt green. On s/s Keynes the fore ship whith bridge and oficers accomondation was removed othrewise it was intakt whith engine and deckhouse on the acterend. The cement factory needs a large qvantity of calcium stone and in the last 30 years of produktion the bougt many old British ships and i can give you some name here. s/s META glasgow Clydesdale Shipowners co.ltd,, s/s FIREBEAM london gas, light and coke company,, s/s PINEWOOD london w.m.france,fenwich&co,, s/s BOWCOMBE stephenson&clarke london,, s/sCORMIST shipowners unown,,. (Cory) All these ships where bougt from Thorsten Johannisson. well Ron i hope this is intresting for you. It nice of you give me a feed back on mail. Hilsen Arnstein

**********

On 10 May 1967 I noted the name of one ship in Middlesbrough Dock. This was the middle of the week in the days before I had a car, and long before I fairly automatically had a camera with me. I suspect I simply decided to trot along there in my lunch-hour - or I may even have gone there on "official business" with the Dock by then being part of the new that year THPA empire.

But that one ship was certainly one worth seeing and when I reported in afterwards to Ray Counter as the then editor of Tees Packet it sent him down memory road:

Tees Packet - Issue 22, May 1967

The following photos of this ship as USKSIDE are from THE 'USK' SHIPS by P.M. Heaton

Later in 1967 she was sold to other Finnish owners and renamed ELJES and the following year was converted for use as a storage hulk in Norway. Anyone know her final demise thereafter?
